Painting. Spitfire.

Art painting Spitfire
Spitfire 8"x10"

Spitfire by Jason Sunderland
Spitfire 8"x10"

Spitfire

This painting was done on rough canvas board at 8” X 10” and primed with gesso.

I always loved the Spitfire airplane’s lines and look, I wanted to capture the planes in flight feel. Man what a feeling it must have been to fly the old WWII prop driven fighter planes.

All paints were done in acrylic and were finish coated in UVLS polymer varnish.

Size: 8"x10"
Price: $125.00 US
Shipping: $15.00 US

Harvard’s

This painting was inspired by the yellow colored Canadian Harvard’s aerial acrobatics team; they fly different WWII era planes. Number 2 is an original Canadian Harvard built in 1941.

The painting was done on pine boxed Masonite 8” X 10” and painted with acrylic paints. I wanted to capture the feel of older wall paper art as well as the action.

This is finished in UVLS polymer varnish.

Size 8"x10"
Price - $85.00 US
Shipping (USA) - $15.00 US

6x6

One from the carton

I wanted to capture a mood and feel as well as an egg almost like old photos or sepia tone. This is on 6” x 6” acyllic primed masonite using various techniques in acryllic paint layers to get depth and transparancy. This is finished in UVLS polymer varnish to keep the colors and sheen.

Available for sale

Look what other artists have to say about this painting
"What a fun take on the challenge! Amazing job in every aspect of the painting. The grout lines are fabulous, and the egg itself is so believable I want to clean it up!"
"Great job and the splatter. Some real nice highlights and textures"
"Who isn't familiar with this scene?!! Wonderful take on this challenge, and beautifully painted!"

Painting. Abstract art

acrylic abstract painting

Abstract painting blue orange
6X6

Oh this is a fun challenge from DPW. I started by brush applying gesso to masonite leaving bush strokes. I chose acrylic paint as a medium, using liquitex cadmium orange and Windsor and newton cobalt blue and a bit of titanium white. Spot mixing to get an oil look was accomplished with slow dry medium, the base was the covered in gloss acrylic with a brush using the same direction brushstrokes as the gesso. The final blended squares were done using pure color blended into heavy molding medium to give dimension and a flat on gloss relief.

So after part one this is a bit more, these were taken in the Pike Place Market area.

It is a fun area to just cruise about and watch people, plus there are always street performers and artists of various kinds for a twist in you daily outing. There is fresh market food available for sale, also fresh flowers whose smell always stand out as odd to me in the midst of concrete and steel.

I always have loved the combination of old buildings surrounded by new modern architecture. When you add in trees, modern metal art, with cool alley ways and varying stairways it seems to tie things together just right. Plus you can feel the vibe of people looking to escape their daily lives, seeking entertainment, or just seeking to hunt down that special something.

Water colors. Dirigible.

The dirigible

This was painted on canvass board while teaching my daughter how to use water color paint, it started using a wet technique letting colors flow and mix on the canvass. The blimp was added using gouache to get the opaqueness necessary. It turned into a simple ,but vibrant imagery that people seemed to like.

This painting sold pretty quickly... I'll explore this more for all of you who have asked!

Seattle photo trip part 1

OK, yes I am still active in photography and have been shooting a bit here and there. This is the first part of looking through my eyes, these were taken in July 2012 from the Alaskan Way Viaduct to Western Ave. in Seattle. Most of the time shooting in bright daylight is difficult, sometimes it is inspiring as well. When shooting photos you can use technique and theory to make great shots, after shooting many years now  I have started to see the camera as a toll and use it differently. Capturing an accurate image is easy, capturing a mood or essence of a subject is really about being there and having the ability to time things right as well as be open to feeling what is around you.

Cities; this section is just my thoughts and opinions about how I feel. As a young man the city was attractive, full of life and vibrant in its looks. What make it this way? Cities are the product of men and their work: architecture  lighting, walking paths, fountains, street signs, factories, retail fronts, nightclubs, and statues are all things that are not existing without man's hands and creativity. To me personally it is about light and shadow, they set a mood and allow what is seen. How do you capture the feel of walking in a area known for tourism and entertainment? How do you capture the feel of walking in an area of the city that has been let go, full of homeless and street people where you do not belong? How do you capture the feeling of being slightly inebriated and walking content in the glow of neon, street lights and dark alleyways? I am just now starting to see photography as a means to art rather than a profession.

Painting. Boat in the clouds.

Boat in the clouds 16"x20"
painting for sale
Close up Boat

Close up clouds
I was lucky enough to see this fishing boat head out on the sound just as the sun peeked up over the cascades. The water and sky lit up in yellow hues just as the fog lifted into the clouds that seemed to be sitting on the water.

I tried to capture the feel of this on canvass, using gessoed canvass and acrylic paint to capture it before the image left my mind. Photos never do a painting justice, so included are a few close up shots for you to see my techniques and execution. The painting is sealed in a clear matte acrylic medium, but can be varnished if you choose to want this option.
